ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 presents an empirical investigation of social choices of concrete persons in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. The qualification of the social realization of dignity in relation to the control quality of a social choice (interactionist, external or internal determinist) narrated by the single interviewed person allows the assessment that claims of dignity, freedom and rights are expressed by ordinary citizens. Excerpts from interviews with 624 individuals randomly chosen according to the six socio-economic strata of Bogotá bear testimony to the struggle for a good life in difficult circumstances of violence and poverty. It is very good news that the peace deal between the left-wing FARC guerillas and the Colombian government in November 2016 ended 50 years of civil war. Nevertheless, the empirical study’s results suggest that a long way still has to be gone until the Colombian people will finally enjoy real justice and peace.
