ABSTRACT

Architecture is an invention of the human mind and we advance its meaning through discourse, critique, and debate. Law, psychology, politics, and art are similar pursuits that are constructed by agreement about what meets the current definition. Just as the meaning and purpose of the built environment has changed over time, so have the standards of justice, normal behavior, governance, and beauty. To become an architect then, one must constructively participate in the conversation. Part two of this chapter uses some of the architectural history of Paris from Haussmann to the present day as a long working example.
