ABSTRACT

Research expands the mission of architecture by generating new knowledge that can be applied to a large range of circumstances. Architecture has a clear responsibility to nurture and advance its own knowledge base, and that activity is called research. This is generalizable solutions to generalizable problems, and without identifying and addressing those problems, architecture’s service to society is impaired. A useful and valid research question is critical to the process in the same way that aspirational intent is to design. Strategies, methods, and tactics are discussed.
