ABSTRACT

From 1922, one person started playing an indispensable and important role in Stuart's relations with Chinese officials and this was one Philip Fugh, who not only accompanied and served Stuart while he was alive, but also gave him a proper burial after his eventual death. In 1923, Stuart together with Philip Fugh first went to Manchuria to call on Chang Tso-lin, who was also known as "Tuchun of Manchuria". During the first 10 years after Yenching was founded, Stuart actively supported students' patriotic campaigns, from which can tell that he was not only keen on education, but enthusiastic about political activities as well. Yet Stuart's involvement with Chinese politics started in a true sense when he persuaded General Chang Hsueh-liang to accept the "Northeast Flag Replacement". It could be said that Stuart's involvement with the Chinese political circles was influenced by Philip Fugh, whose original intention had been to extend Yenching University's influence.
