ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on listing a dozen sleep disorders which have been treated effectively through the use of hypnosis and hypnotic techniques. Somnambulism is a common parasomnia occurring in slow-wave non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, generally during the first third of the night. It is considered a disorder of arousal. Parasomnia overlap disorder is a sleep disorder characterized by the association of REM sleep parasomnia with an NREM sleep parasomnia in the same patient. REM sleep behavior disorder occurs in REM sleep with loss of inhibition of motor pathways. Nightmares are a parasomnia occurring during REM sleep. Dreams are frightening and usually involve anxiety, but anger, rage, or other negative feelings may occur. Bruxism is grinding or clenching of the teeth. It may occur during wakefulness or during sleep. Night terrors are a disorder of arousal typically occurring in NREM slow-wave sleep; sleepwalking also occurs during NREM slow-wave sleep.
