ABSTRACT

Writing is one of the expressive modes of language arts, like speaking and visually representing. Reading, writing, and ciphering were seen as necessary for people to accomplish such daily tasks as reading the Bible, writing letters to family members, and keeping track of money. Writing is a process in which the writer grows and develops at her own pace, reflecting her own language development, experiences, and abilities. Writing leaves traces of a person’s thoughts visible, and these traces can provide with clues about what a student knows and can do when it comes to writing. Emerging writers are beginning to combine both written letters and pictures to convey ideas. Some understanding of the connection between letters and sounds appears with the use of beginning and ending consonants, but conventional spelling is still a few stages down the road. Students between the ages of five and seven are usually at the developing stage of writing growth.
