“Now I must start when I was a child in swaddling clothes at Teigur. I was born at Sámsstaðir.” 1 Guðrún begins her narrative with these words, according to manuscript ÍB 883 8vo. She was born in the Öngulsstaðir district on 25 June 1759, the second child of her parents, who were poor tenant smallholders living in that district.
