ABSTRACT

At the end of November 1786, a year after Ketill's death, sheriff's officers arrived at Teigur to settle the estate of the deceased. The younger Guðrún and Kristján were present as representatives of the heirs, together with their mother. The inventory of the couple's goods gives an illuminating picture of the life of struggling crofters in that time of want. Guðbjörg and Ketill had farmed at Teigur for 24 years, and now it was their children's turn. Both Kristján and Guðrún may have had thoughts of taking over the smallholding; they had both been living with their mother for some time.
