ABSTRACT

The young fisherman who had caught Guðrún's eye turned out to be a bold deceiver. Once she knew him better, Guðrún described him in rather different terms, as seen in the full text of the autobiography:

When I got there, there were fishermen, among whom was one from Hrafnagil, that cursed rascal named Illugi – a handsome man, but many wolves are hidden in sheep's clothing, and so it was with him. He offered me all his service, but a pig in a poke can be a bad bargain. He had fair hair and wore a blue jacket, a green shirt, a hat and good shoes. 1
