ABSTRACT
No documentation has been found regarding Guðrún's divorce from Illugi; she appears to have been destitute when she left Hof with her son. 1 In four of the extant manuscripts of Guðrún's story, Jón is said to have remained with his mother after the couple separated. But manuscripts ÍB 883 8vo and Lbs 5001 8vo state that Guðrún was alone when she went into service in Skagafjörður after separating from Illugi, as does the published version in Gríma. As mentioned above, the registers of parishioners for the Hrafnagil parish are very patchy for this period, consisting of the pastor's rough notes rather than a formal register. But Jón Illugason is not listed in the register of parishioners for Hrafnagil in 1804.
