ABSTRACT

The 1890 Celebrated C.B. Bridal Corset is a beautiful example of a manufactured corset produced during the second half of the 19th century, and is part of the costume collection held by Hampshire Museum Services, at Chilcombe House, England. The corset was made by Charles Bayer & Co of London Wall, a manufacturing company established in the late 19th century. Adverts boasted the corsets were made of the finest French fabrics and were easy fitting to render the hourglass figure required by women of the period. The corset has a waist tape that is stamped “Celebrated C.B. Bridal Corset, none genuine unless stamped with the trademark C.B. Corsets Rd.” It was available to buy with a straight or spoon busk. The example at Hampshire Museum services has a spoon busk.
