ABSTRACT

What is justice? How do we think about it in the context of tourism? This chapter contemplates the idea of justice, provides some guidance on studying this complex subject, and commences to examine social justice and tourism. John Rawls’s influential theory of justice as fairness sets the stage for critique and investigation that will continue in future chapters. Issues of equity and rights in the context of tourism and the actions of various tourism related stakeholders are discussed with the help of several examples, including the case of Finnish trade unions contributed by Johan Edelheim. The case study by Blanca Camargo at the end of the chapter helps to illustrate some of the social justice issues and tourism related challenges experienced by the Maya in Quintana Roo, Mexico.
