ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a study to examine eight factors deemed to be relevant to elaboration of the structure of employment of foreign groups in Kuwait. Items included in the survey were the country of origin, length of stay, educational status, age structure, geographical distribution in Kuwait, past employment, occupation in Kuwait and all other appropriate materials. The chapter examines how far the foreign labour force brought in appropriate skills to Kuwait and used them in their employment there. By April 1982, the Kuwaiti authorities were calling for joint action by the Arab states of the Gulf area to control the growth of the foreign labour force. Flows of foreign exchange from Kuwait in the form of remittances were running at a high level by 1981 at the same time that claims on Kuwaiti financial resources for domestic and other needs were rising rapidly while oil income was declining.
