ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the skill of questioning and begins with a discussion on the power of questions for discovery, inquiry and learning and the important connection between questioning, curiosity and creativity. It explores modelling as a strategy for promoting the use of questions and as a tool to enhance critical thinking. Critical thinking is about asking different types of questions and having a genuine interest in the answers. In educational contexts, questioning is a versatile skill that enables learners to think, plan, focus, assess, evaluate, synthesise, self-regulate and reflect. Although questioning is frequently integrated into teaching strategies, the full potential of developing this skill from a learner’s perspective is often unclear. Providing opportunities for learners to develop skills individually and with peers is a useful strategy to employ. Individually, learners can identify questions that will help them to gain clarity, understanding and perspective.
