ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on synthesis as a skill for critical thinking. It deals with a discussion on the usefulness of synthesis in our daily lives and within higher education contexts. In discussing critical thinking it is useful to point out that synthesis is a different skill to summation. Having the ability to comprehend the type of information and the level at which it is presented can enable a critical approach to synthesis. Within the context of education, synthesis is the ability to use information that has been gathered from multiple sources in a creative and meaningful way. It is reasonable to suggest that, in the context of higher education, synthesis is a skill that will become more relevant as learners progress through their academic careers. As a skill related to critical thinking, synthesis requires guidance, practice and feedback.
