ABSTRACT

This chapter provides understanding of decision making from a critical thinking perspective. People engage in decision making many times each day. Sometimes people can make decisions confidently as there is an accumulation of comprehensive data to draw on. Despite the effort people may apply to ensure they are thinking in a critical, analytical and evaluative manner, ‘Human choices are remarkably susceptible to the manner in which options are presented’. There are circumstances where people do not have the luxury of time and space to think and where emotion could potentially impact negatively on their decisions. When people make a decision to invest, they tend to continue the investment even if emerging evidence is suggesting that no more investment should be made. Within educational environments, the ability to think critically about decisions being made is of benefit to learners, educators and the institution.
