ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the role that creativity can play in enhancing critical thinking. Creativity is a widely researched topic in education. It is reasonable to suggest that, although progress is being made in understanding how creativity relates to thinking, there is disagreement on how best to develop creativity in higher education. The value of creativity in education has been reported by research for decades. Besides education, there is also a great deal of support for the idea that creativity can be used in critical ways in multiple contexts. In the right environment creativity can blossom. Environments that embody a positive and open approach to ‘communication, consensus, consistency, clarity, coherence, consideration, community, cohesiveness, commitment, concern, care, and cooperation’ are more likely to support creativity and creative thinking. Using inquiry-based learning as a formal strategy is a way to promote creative thinking and creativity.
