ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the previous chapters of this book. Even a brief examination of Coventry's present day motor industry brings a realization of the degree of contraction that has occurred over recent decades. Despite the symptoms of decline, the motor industry remains an important part of Coventry's economy, while the richness of its traditions continues to exert a strong influence upon the local culture. The pattern of change associated with Coventry's motor industry in recent decades has been the product of many forces, though the historical legacy requires special emphasis. The influence of the past was perhaps most noticeable in the relatively small scale nature of the Coventry motor plants, which made it virtually impossible to achieve really high levels of efficiency. Coventry is today seeking to restructure its economy after the traumas of the 1970s.
