ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a coding procedures along with some strategies for analyzing coded data using data display techniques. The first type of coding is Descriptive Coding. Descriptive codes are uniform descriptive terms that a researcher assigns to material he or she is coding. The second type of coding is Pattern Coding. Pattern coding involves identifying relationships between elements within the coded data. After initial descriptive coding of the interviews with housing applicants, the manager wants to define the types of barriers that respondents report. Coding interview transcripts can use strategies similar to taking notes in a class. The basic ideas behind coding interview transcripts are instructive for coding other types of media. The clearest analogue to interview transcripts is a formal document. The assignment of codes and the software recognition of codes are essential to the central distinguishing function of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software.
