ABSTRACT
One of the lingering academic debates involves whether charisma resides with the leader or is a socially constructed phenomenon. Some specific underlying dichotomies include whether charisma is a cause or effect of leadership, and whether charisma comes from impressions of the leader or from leader behaviour. The debate parallels the more general conflict between a leader-oriented (entitative) and a relational conception of leadership. This chapter proposes a way out of this deadlock by considering charisma as a sublime aesthetic encounter, a prime example of which is the intersubjectivity between ensemble members in the perfect musical moment. The music as mission is a particularly strong mediator between agency and surrender, because we commit to the musical flow even as we awaken to our own musicality.
