ABSTRACT

The biblical texts about the Tower of Babel, the Babylonian kingdom, and Nebuchadnezzar have shaped our images of Babylon for over 2000 years. The prophets’ devastating speeches and the trauma of the Exile to Babylon may have had the most profound impact, and in the New Testament, Babylon has become a symbol of an evil empire and is also applied to ancient Rome. The biblical texts also contain more positive memories of Babylon, which were often repressed or forgotten.
