ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the exploration of interpretation moves into the practical application of interpretive technique in the analytic setting. A primary template for the interpretive process is developed. This template is referred to as the interpretive cycle and involves four cyclical, interwoven stages: confrontational observation, inferential clarification, interpretation, and construction. The function and focus of each stage are provided. Additionally, the stages are amply illustrated with clinical examples. Finally, reader exercises for further development are suggested.
