ABSTRACT

To aid in the development of a differentiated utilization of interpretation, this chapter introduces a number of categories of interpretation. This facilitates a more flexible and multi-faceted approach to interpretation. The categories of interpretation addressed include: trial interpretations, transference interpretations, countertransference interpretations, interpersonal interpretations, defense interpretations, resistance interpretations, intrapsychic interpretations, archetypal interpretations, situational–environmental interpretations, interpretation of fantasies and dreams, and interpretation of behaviors. As with other chapters, clinical examples are provided throughout to demonstrate the type of interpretation being discussed.
