ABSTRACT

People tend to want to categorize the world around them. This is a natural effort as people attempt to bring order and understanding to the world. This approach has had some positive trends—the ability to organize activities, to build communities, and building understanding—but it has also led to some negative trends—such as racism and discrimination. The challenge with this form of categorization is that it not only loses detail in examination, but it often fails to identify how the various boxes are connected and reliant upon each other. This is why people can use such broad sweeping statements in demographics which fail to recognize the cultural and social differences that exist within those communities and they gain some level of recognition.
