ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 discusses the various ways in which literary works can bring value to the practice of coaching. It explains the cognitive and emotional benefits of reading and how these resonate with the aims of coaching. While exploring the commonalities shared by reading and coaching that account for the myriad ways literature can enhance the coaching process, the chapter describes how a short story by Herman Melville was used with coaching students and evaluates the successes and challenges of this pedagogical experiment.
