ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 investigates the parallels between literature and coaching in the context of a discussion of the pedagogical and coaching uses of the fiction of John Cheever and the writing of James Baldwin. The chapter presents an argument for the role of emotions in coaching, exploring how literary works can enhance emotional competence and thus be used to enable the navigation of complex emotional processes in the coaching dialogue. The chapter goes on to highlight the role of memory and the narrative imperative in coaching.
