ABSTRACT

In the context of a discussion of Arthur Miller’s 1949 play Death of a Salesman, Chapter 4 traces the history of the salesman, the forces at work in the commercial traveler’s existence, the origins of Miller’s play, and how it articulates Miller’s philosophy regarding success, money, and morality. The chapter reports on the ways a number of coaching students used the play as an effective springboard for discussing workplace themes. On the basis of a series of interviews with trainee coaches, the chapter builds a thick description of the potential benefits of using a play such as Miller’s in the context of organizational coaching.
