ABSTRACT

A discomfort intolerance attitude is an extreme stance towards the tolerability of an adverse event or the discomfort or distress experienced in reaction to it when our demands go unfulfilled. Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) theory hypothesizes that flexible attitudes are at the core of emotional health. It hypothesizes that non-extreme attitudes stem from the individual's flexible attitudes. This chapter provides an example of the role of discomfort intolerance attitudes in the common problem of procrastination and how to develop anti-procrastination discomfort tolerance attitudes. In self-defeating avoidance behaviours like procrastination, the rigid attitude for comfort and the derivative attitude of intolerance for discomfort usually play a prominent role. In problems such as procrastination and other areas where intolerance of discomfort is a prominent feature, REBT mounts a concerted focus on examining both the rigid attitudes which lie at the core of emotional disturbance and the extreme discomfort intolerance attitudes which stem from these core rigid attitudes.
