ABSTRACT

When the language teacher appreciates the fact that writing reinforces the acquisition of other skills, assists memory retention, and provides opportunities for calm yet active lessons, it is easy to justify in the classroom. This chapter provides a checklist of the wide range of writing tasks at the teacher's disposal, analyses in detail a writing lesson, and then looks at the specific skills of essay writing for intermediate and advanced students, and the skill of summary writing. The various types of writing tasks include copy-writing from a book or the board to establish simple spellings, writing down words spelled out orally, and writing down corrected answers to false statements given orally. An intermediate-level writing lesson is about telling students that by the end of the lesson they will be able to write an article or blog which they could share with a student from the TL country.
