ABSTRACT

Every effective language teacher is able to work at reasonable pace, is skilled with the various interactions he/she uses, and knows how to challenge the class in front of them, wherever his/her starting point may be. This chapter looks at different types of classroom dialogue: using questions and other types of interaction. It deals with questioning in detail, showing its distinctive use in language teaching subject compared to others. The chapter shows how outstanding teachers use a full range of interactions to engage all students, stretching them to the limit. It is useful to personalise questions whenever possible to raise interest. As adolescents are quite self-focused, teachers can use this fact to their advantage when planning topics and lessons. It is also useful to have a range of different speaking interactions. The chapter presents a selection of the many interactions the language teacher can use, or which students can use with each other.
