ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on formative assessment, sometimes called assessment for learning (helping students progress), preparing students for summative assessment (tests and exams), homework, marking and feedback. It suggests learning strategies to help pupils move forward and do well in exams, along with useful homework tasks. The main aim of marking is to make sure that students have done their work. Some schools have success in lowering teacher workload by using a technique which has been used for years, namely whole-class feedback. Peer feedback is when the teacher asks students in pairs, for example, to check each other's work before it is handed in or after a task is completed in class. There has been a considerable emphasis on Assessment for Learning as a means of moving students forward in their learning.
