ABSTRACT

This chapter examines in detail how the language teacher can work through lesson sequences in the classroom with emphasis on the specific interactions between the teacher and students, as well as between students themselves. The rationale for using pictures and other visual aids is that they make language more memorable, provide an excellent focus of attention and enable the teacher to teach without too much recourse to English. The chapter examines how the teacher can exploit pictures to the best effect, and breaks down suggested teaching routines with the aim of highlighting how effective teachers generate intensive input and output-rich language. The use of flashcards, PowerPoint slides, and storytelling picture sequence are explained. A simple picture can be the stimulus for considerable discussion with advanced level students. This is extremely easy to prepare and a fun idea for creating conversation lessons.
