ABSTRACT

The context of the social work intervention plays a crucial role in shaping the meaning clients and social workers attach to the intervention experience. This chapter explores the impact of context on all aspects of practice with individuals. It examines generalist practice competencies and behaviors that support client strengths within their environments, as the variety of social work roles and methods that support client-worker relationships, including strengths-, narrative-, and solution-focused approaches. The chapter also includes case examples to help one to bridge the gaps between strengths-based, environmental, social justice, human rights, and social construction perspectives. It explores various aspects of social work practice in action, including interventions that support clients' strengths and their environments and the practice activities associated with contemporary social work roles. The chapter ends with a discussion of the termination and evaluation and follow-up of the planned change intervention, focusing on strengths-based strategies to help the client maintain accomplished goals.
