ABSTRACT

A part-part-whole problem is a problem that discusses the two parts and the whole. There are three types of part-part-whole problems. The first is a problem where the whole is unknown. The second kind of problem is a problem where one of the parts is unknown. In this type of problem, we are given the whole and one of the parts. The task is to figure out the other part. The third type of problem is a both addends unknown problem. In this type of problem both addends are not known; only the total is given. The task is to figure out all of the possible combinations. Part-part-whole word problems are learned in kindergarten. They start learning the whole unknown versions of these problems. The other two versions are often picked up in 1st grade. However, in the CCSS, kindergarteners are expected to know the both addends unknown version of this problem.
