ABSTRACT

There are many different types of word problems that students should be able to solve. They should be able to use frameworks to solve odd and even problems, array problems, and money and time problems. Money problems are difficult for students. Students need to actually hold and count and reason about money using the play money. They need to do 2 and 3 step problems involving all of the operations by actually acting them out. First, we need to teach students to identify what type of problem they are working with. Next we need to teach them how to model the problem in different ways. Many state standards now actually state that 2nd graders should know how to illustrate their mathematical thinking about measurement through drawings. This is very interesting, given that this is not a part of many textbook curriculums.
