ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author shares her experiences promoting her work to the public, which can range from exhilarating and fun to occasionally frustrating, scary, and stressful. Using new media means creating a website, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media accounts to help share one's ideas and promote his/her work. The author discusses traditional media, along with tips for getting reporters to pay attention to one's work and suggestions for radio and television appearances. If the idea of being on television leaves one panicked and unable to speak, there is no need to force oneself to do an on-camera interview. The author also discusses the occasional need to 'go private' and to figure out one's own personal boundaries when promoting his/her ideas to the public. Some social scientists take the next step and help write and produce documentary films themselves, perhaps if a best-selling book prompts a filmmaker's interest, or based on one's own initiative.
