ABSTRACT

Music supervisors are qualified and specialized professionals who can help with all music-related aspects of film, television, advertising, video games, and any other media formats. Music supervisors have up-to-date knowledge of many styles of music and have established connections with the music industry. Understanding the requirements of the project at hand, a music supervisor will actively look for music that serves project-specific needs. Music supervisors will regularly receive materials from major record labels, independent labels, artistic managers, directly from bands and solo performers, and directly from composers. Music supervisors secure the rights of new and existing recordings, and clear synchronization and master use licenses of pre-existing music. Music supervisors can help explore possibilities for additional music uses, perhaps external to the project itself, to maximize ancillary revenue streams such as soundtrack album sales, promotional tie-ins, etc. The music editor is to music what the picture editor is to the footage.
