ABSTRACT

The author has heard people say that when he grows old, it is as if he enters his second childhood. Attempting to find his way out of this infantile state, he tried to assert himself by saying that he was ready, but would be discounted as not having the mental capacity to make an informed decision for himself. After an extensive period of brooding, lasting weeks, he came to the realisation that he would need to control his flashes of rage and sadness. Although he could more easily see physical challenges such as walking/eating/breathing as an issue that would need to be dealt with as a natural consequence of an insult to the brain; dealing with family dynamics was completely unforeseen. Although the Wellington hospital is one of the best neurological rehabilitation centres in the world, with renowned medical staff, it still mattered very much who actually treated him as the actual rehabilitation was carried out by the therapists.
