ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the nexus between ideology and policy ideas of Social Democracy as they have been shaped by their views on 'public welfare' to be attained by the public use of state powers. It elaborates different types of policy strategy and their relationship with Social Democracy in view of achieving 'public welfare' by means of the "Dual Welfare State". The chapter examines the development of Social Democratic policy agendas in terms of project and model in relation to its emergence and progress as a political movement considering the pathways and performances of Social Democracy. The value-related goal of the attainment of equity is equally important to achieve Social Democratic goals. Political control of socio-economic life is institutionally limited by the 'liberal democratic rule of law' on the one hand and Social Democratic ideology and strategy is influenced by the conditions of 'mixed economy' or at the most by 'market socialism' on the other hand.
