ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses key concepts in trauma-informed yoga (TIY) including environment, touch, assists, language, sequencing, and modifications. Each category will continue to explore the concepts we’ve outlined in previous chapters, expanding on potential triggers and resources and how to navigate them in a trauma-informed setting. We focus here on becoming aware of triggers and preventing them in order to build a felt sense of safety for participants, but we cannot prevent all experiences that activate a negative samskara or traumatic memory. Instead, we seek to create an embodied experience of safety, and, when triggers arise, offer supports through the tools we have learned.
