ABSTRACT
Following French sociologist Edgar Morin’s work, this chapter discusses the relevance of the term ‘religion’ as a Western category and in previous research on Muslims in Europe. After presenting alternative concepts for analysing Islam and Muslims in social sciences, Alain Caillé’s anti-utilitarian theory for action is introduced as a powerful means by which to study Muslims participating socially and politically.
