ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the case study of this book. The most important medieval environmental, demographic, socioeconomic and political characteristics of the Campine are discussed. The Campine peasant society can be labelled as a marginal economy focussed on mixed farming which experienced a remarkable economic and demographic boom during the later Middle Ages.
