ABSTRACT
This chapter explores why inclusive commons did not have to lead to a tragedy of the commons. The Campine communities prevented overexploitation and free riding and fended off privatisation attempts for centuries. The key to success is found in inclusive, informal institutions, strong collective action and effective conflict resolution mechanisms.
