ABSTRACT

Film is a language used to tell stories, and the narrator of those stories is the camera. Most of the time, the narrator speaks with an "objective" voice. The personality of the narrator and the style in which the story is told are introduced at the beginning of a film. Sometimes a subjective voice is desired. The distinctions between subjective and objective camera will become clearer, especially in the thorough analysis of Notorious in which Hitchcock uses an active camera as well as a subjective voice. The camera is always at eye level. Extreme low or high angles have to be justified by the essence of the moment that must be conveyed while at the same time paying heed to the overall design and style of the film. However, before the camera rolls, the director should always set up the shot and check out any staging and camera movements that will occur.
