ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents the setting up the routines and supports for daily writing in a classroom. The students are only told that they will be expected to write in the book daily and should shop with an eye to finding something that matches their style and preferences. The author want students to think about how their choices influence their motivation to write. A teacher who writes with their students is a teacher who understands the challenges in getting words right. Some community groups provide school supplies to underprivileged students. Form a connection with these groups to supply teacher' students with notebooks, pens, and pencils. Plan to spend a good twenty minutes of class time talking to students about the requirement of having a Daybook of their own to bring to class. By showing students how to index those writings on the last page, students can see how they are building their thinking around an assignment to come.
