ABSTRACT

This chapter first highlights the types of activities and questions that comprise Attentive Listening, then describes the musical characteristics of repertoire that can lead to successful experiences in this dimension. Following this, pedagogical techniques are addressed, including issues such as effective approaches to questioning and response modalities that lead to growth on the part of the children. Throughout the chapter, “episodes” contain learning activities that attend to each of these points in turn. Of the six episodes in the chapter, three are explicitly labeled “Learning Pathways,” the musical examples that will return in later chapters to highlight other dimensions of World Music Pedagogy. The remaining episodes contain musical examples that will only be used in this chapter.
