ABSTRACT

Nonchord tones:

Are melodic embellishments that do not belong to the prevailing chord

Sound dissonant against chord members

May occur in any voice (SATB) but are most common to the main melody

May be diatonic or chromatic

Are classified by how they are approached and resolved—by the interval (unison, step, or leap) and the direction (same, different, down, or up) of the approach and resolution

Are accented if occurring on a beat or with a chord change, and unaccented if falling between beats and chords

Are circled and labeled in analysis
