ABSTRACT

Although Tantawi Jawhari is still considered one of the key figures in quranic scientific interpretation, he is cited and studied less often than later scholars whose interests participated in the Quran-and-science debate. Maurice Bucaille was the head of the surgical section at the University of Paris. He was also the family physician of the Saudi King, Faisal. He spent his pre-university years at a Catholic school, in which Christianity was given greater emphasis in the curriculum than it would have at an ordinary school. Although Bucaille presented a comparative work about the connection between science, the Bible, and the Quran, his work apparently did not enjoy expected popularity among Christians who believe that the Bible is divine and infallible. Undoubtedly, it would not be difficult for a Westerner such as Bucaille to gain exegetical popularity among Muslims by criticising the Bible and praising the Quran.
