ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the intersection of politics, media, and gender norms represented by the 2016 presidential race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The former candidate was the first woman to ever win the nomination of a major political party in the United States and the latter would be described by many as the most openly misogynistic candidate (and President) in modern history. This historic election campaign took place during a time of cultural and political struggle over the roles of women in society and also at a time when the power of traditional media was being challenged by changing information structures. The chapter describes how media discourse of the time shaped perceptions of the race and introduces five moments during the 2016 campaign when gender issues captured everyone’s attention.
