ABSTRACT

The research reported in this chapter provides a unique picture of young people's attitudes to sexuality and relationships with the opposite sex. It reveals two major findings. The first finding is that the double standard still exists, particularly in the hearts and minds of young men; the second is that young women are sincerely concerned about the attitudes displayed by young men and see these as deriving from gender based stereotypes. By the age of sixteen, young women and men have very divergent views of their relationships and their respective roles within them. On the subject of what males needed to cover in the area of feelings and emotions, the female respondents were quite clear that males are not good at knowing or expressing their feelings. On the topic of rape, the males distanced themselves from the issue by making comments such as 'only mental people rape'.
